The Ansonia
West 73rd and 74th Streets on Broadway
These photos are all from West 73rd Street
In its heyday, the Ansonia was the residence of Babe Ruth, Theodore Dreiser, Flo Ziegfeld, Arturo Toscanini and many others. Bette Midler got her start in the Continental Baths, housed there.
On the darker side, the 1919 Black Sox scandal was cooked up in this building, and in the 1970's, Plato's Retreat, a notorious sex club, flourished there.

Eastgate
East 73rd Street between Second and Third Avenues
Originally called East Village when it was completed in 1929,
the project includes six buildings on both sides of the street.
A commemorative plaque calls it "a harmonious ensemble
unified by the same colors, textures and style of ornamentation."
