Marble Hill

September 2007

Marble Hill is a section of Manhattan surrounded by the Bronx and separated from the island of Manhattan by the Harlem River. Originally, Marble Hill was the northern tip of Manhattan island, separated from the mainland by the meandering Spuyten Duyvil Creek. Below are two maps, one from 1776 on the left and the other from the mid-19th century.
Construction of a canal from the Harlem River to Spyten Duyvil Creek in the late 1800's made Marble Hill an island, but when the creek was later filled in, Marble Hill became a part of the mainland. To this day, however, it remains a portion of New York County (Manhattan). The red line shows roughly how the canal severed Marble Hill from Manhattan Island
