Lehman GISc Graduate Student Wins Award in International Map Design Competition!
Janet Norquist-Gonzales, a graduate student in the Geographic Information Science Program, recently was notified that her map, "Jerome-Gun Hill Business Improvement District," won an Honorable Mention Award in the Annual Map Design Competition of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM). The ACSM is a cartographic/geographic professional society encompassing members from all nations in the western hemisphere (the Americas), and this is the 31st year that they have held the international competition. Janet's map was judged in comparison to hundreds of other map design entries from all over North and South America and the Caribbean. Winning map entries are displayed at the U.S. Library of Congress, and then become part of the Library of Congress' permanent collection.
The map, "Jerome-Gun Hill Business Improvement District," was produced for the Jerome-Gun Hill B.I.D., a non-profit business and neighborhood improvement association dedicated to community economic development and small business assistance in this busy northern Bronx neighborhood, which is virtually adjacent to the Lehman College campus. In addition to highlighting the locations of neighborhood retail and service establishments, the map depicts cultural landmarks and recreational facilities available in the community. The Map Project was funded by a grant from New York State Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz through the Empire State Development Corporation's Aid to Localities Community Project. Copies of the map are available through the B.I.D., at (718) 324-4946.
The complete list of the winning maps in the ACSM competition (including images of the maps) can be seen at their web site: http://www.acsm.net/cagis/03mapwinners.html
